Workboat Propelled by Elco Electric Motors
Recognized for Technological Advances
New York canal tender honored as one of WorkBoat Magazine’s Significant Boats of 2014
ATHENS, N.Y. – Dec. 11, 2014 – Tender 4, the first electrically powered workboat in the New York State Canal System, has been selected as one of the Significant Boats of 2014 by WorkBoat Magazine for advances in technology and design. The vessel was repowered earlier this year with twin Elco EP-10000 electric motors through a project conducted by the New York State Canal Corporation (“Canal Corporation”), the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), New West Technologies, and Elco Motor Yachts, a leader in electric and hybrid marine propulsion for more than 120 years. The owners, designers and builders of the Significant Boats of 2014 were recognized during the 2014 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans.
WorkBoat Magazine’s Significant Boats of 2014 are selected annually by the publication’s editors to recognize ten vessels that deserve special recognition. The boats are selected for technological and design advances, as well as other criteria such as speed and style.
Tender 4 is a 40-foot dredge tender propelled by twin EP-10000 electric motors, which each generate power comparable to a 100 horsepower diesel motor. The motors provide a cleaner, quieter cruising experience with an operational service life of 50,000 hours. In addition, the batteries powering the motors can be recharged with shore power, which greatly reduces fuel costs. Tender 4 is part of an ongoing project to determine the potential energy, environmental and economic impacts of repowering the Canal Corporation’s fleet of workboats with electric propulsion systems.
“We’re proud to support this project that introduced electric propulsion to the Canal Corporation’s fleet of workboats,” said Elco CEO Steve Lamando. “We hope this recognition from WorkBoat Magazine will encourage other organizations to explore the opportunities alternative energy offers the marine industry. Electric motors not only provide an economic benefit through reducing fuel costs, but also help reduce air and water pollution while providing a viable power source for heavy workloads.”
