I’ve been around boats my entire life. Like most who work in the marine world I started as a teenager at a local marina in NJ where I learned finishing work. This planted the seed to attend the famed, North West School Of Wooden Boat Building at age 18. I can’t explain how valuable this experience was and recommend it to any young person that wants to get into the field.

I spent 16 years of my career learning the marine business at a 3rd Generation Family Owned Boat Yard which is where I refined my skills in all areas of boat building. Some of the guys had worked there for 50 plus years, learning from people with that much experience is super valuable, you learn the right way and the fast way, because if you can’t do It fast you can’t run a successful business.

In 2013 I started Schell Custom Boat Works where we work on all phases of Wooden Boat Building and Restoration, along with rigging, spar building, fiber-glass work and so much more.

One of my customers came to me with a Launch from 1896 called Segar. I restored every piece of her from stem to stern. The customer has three other Elco powered boats and he loves them all. When it came to choosing a motor, Elco Electric was the only choice.

The installation was quite easy and Elco’s prompt customer service made it stress free. When we had questions, they were quick to respond and guide us through the process. The motors really never need servicing, they have one moving part and work without a glitch. This customer uses his electric boats very often, after the motor installation is complete you just forget about it.

Electric boat operation is such a cool experience. The silent propulsion is really just amazing, you can enjoy the people you’re with and have conversation without the sound of a diesel and keeping the environment safe. The Electric motors over-all are simple, powerful and quiet – perfect for all types of boats but especially launches like this beautiful boat, Segar.
